Fixing "Path Too Long" Error When Downloading MDriven Mergables

This guide explains how to resolve the "Error unzipping" dialog that appears when downloading or updating Mergable Models in MDriven Designer. This error occurs because of the Windows path length limitation, which restricts fully qualified file names to a maximum of 260 characters.

Symptom

When downloading or updating Mergable Models in MDriven Designer, an "Error unzipping" dialog appears with the message:

"The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters".

Cause

The default directory path used by MDriven Designer for Turnkey components (often deep under AppData\Local\Apps\...) combined with mergable file names exceeds the Windows maximum path length.

Resolution

To resolve the error, choose a shorter base path for the components:

1. In MDriven Designer, open the AssetsTK Synk tab.
2. Locate the "Components to choose from" section showing the current path.
3. Click the Browse button.
4. In Browse For Folder, choose a location with a shorter base path such as Downloads.
5. Click Make New Folder to create a directory like merge-models.
6. Click OK.
7. Ensure the shorter path appears in the field.
8. Click the green (Re)Download Components from GitHub button.
